ATHX DUBLIN 2026 RECAP

The CrossFit Gorey crew showed up in force for the recent ATHX DUBLIN, and we couldn’t be prouder! The event took place in the RDS on Saturday 31st of May and this was the second year the event has been on Irish soil. We ended up with 15 athletes competing on the day, which was one of the larger groups we’ve had at one event. Everyone had been training hard over the past few months in preparation for this event, building their strength & endurance and practicing the workout formats. Below is a small recap of the event that also might serve as a guide for those who are considering taking on ATHX in the future.

The Event

ATHX test three areas of your fitness Strength, Endurance and Metabolic conditioning(Metcon). This aligns quite nicely with how we blend our training in CrossFit Gorey each week, as a result I believe everyone felt very prepared and confident entering the event.

The event has three main divisions ATHX LITE (Aimed at beginners), ATHX & ATHX Pro. You also have the choice of competing as an individual or a team of two with male, female and mixed teams. The event takes two and a half hours from start to finish and comprises of six different zones. After checking in for your heat you enter a waiting area for your heat to start, here you are briefed on the flow of the event as well as some general housekeeping. Now let’s get in the zone….

WARM UP ZONE(30:00). This is the first zone you enter. Lots of time here to do a general warm up and start preparing for the strength test. You also use this time to perform some warm up and build up sets so you are ready to take on your target weights as soon as you hit the competition floor. Pro-tip: If you’re going to need a last minute toilet break, factor this in.

STRENGTH ZONE(20:00) This year’s strength tests included a 5 rep Deadlift, 3 rep Back Squat and a 1 rep Shoulder Press for max load, with 6-8 minutes for each lift. You have time here for two to three sets at most.

REFUEL ZONE(10:00) Here you’ll get organised for your Endurance test. You are assigned an ankle bracelet to track your run. You can also grab some drinks from vendors to get “refuelled” for the next event.

ENDURANCE ZONE(30:00) Next up is your endurance, this one is all about testing your grit in a longer effort. This year event was 22 minutes of max distance rowing & running. Upon completion of the endurance workout you’ll have earned some much needed recovery time.

RECOVERY ZONE(30:00) You’ll get a slightly longer break here before tackling the last stage.

METCON X ZONE(25:00). This last workout tests your metabolic conditioning in a shorter more high intensity mixed modal setting. This years workout included ski, db ground to overhead, box jumps, dumbbell lunges burpee broad jumps and sandbag carries. This is faster paced and higher power output and a type 2 “fun” way to finish the event.

A big shoutout to Brian & Lee, Dean & Sinead, Ross & PJ, Niamh F & Izzy, James & Shane, Niamh K & Kyrie, Nikki L, Caoimhe & Diasy.

To our support crew who travelled and cheered us on through every workout, it doesn’t go unnoticed, thank you! We’d like to also thank ATHX organisers for a well-run event

If you’re interested in testing your fitness in an event like this please let our coaches know and we’ll give you guidance on how to get involved and how to tailor your training towards the event. Events like this can serve as a nice goal to train towards and give your training some focus. Next years’ ATHX season is already shaping up and it looks like it’ll be back June 2027!! Meanwhile it’s back to training!
